Little Lambs Christian Daycare is located in the township of Imizamo Yethu (often referred to as “Mandela Park”) in Hout Bay, a suburb situated not far from the city centre of Cape Town.
The daycare currently accommodates 285 children aged 12 months to 6 years. There are 11 classrooms and 17 ablution facilities, a kitchen and offices. The individual buildings are connected by verandas and the large playground has various play structures for the children’s outside play and recreation.
VISIT TO THE ‘WORLD OF BIRDS’
Children growing up in a township are not accustomed to spending time in nature. This is a foreign experience for them. They have, for instance, no knowledge of birds and the amazing songs of birdlife; this should be part of a child’s upbringing and general appreciation of the value of nature.
We are therefore grateful that, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, funds for transport and entrance fees were donated for all our 5-6 year old children’s recent visit to the famous “World of Birds” in Hout Bay.
For some day before the outing, the teachers involved the children with stories and pictures of a variety of birds; stories were told and lots of pictures of birds were provided for colouring in. This naturally piqued the children’s interest for the actually visit.
Teachers and children were transported by bus to the ‘World of Birds’ venue where a whole new world presented itself. For 3 hours, these incredulous children were shepherded through this amazing environment – always on the lookout for different bird species – plus they saw some 4-legged animals there. Their awareness was so stimulated and the children literally bombarded their teachers with questions and excited comments to which their teachers responded with empathy and patience.
The peacock, with its beautiful spread plumage and loud cry, fascinated the little ones. Guinea fowls, small antelopes, monkeys – and even snakes, were spotted and identified – some specifies seen on rocks, in bushes or on the branches; also of course, ducks, geese, parrots and really colourful varieties of birds – as well as eagles and other birds of prey. The children were a little daunted by some creatures, so kept a safe distance behind the fences.
After the walk-around, the children sat together and enjoyed a small picnic of fruit and juices before the bus returned them to ”Little Lambs”.
Our children were so happy to have this experience. It will be remembered as a truly wonderful and unforgettable day in their lives.
All in all, it was a wonderful and interesting day for the children, which was only made possible by your willing support and willingness to donate.
