The whales are frolicking in Hermanus! The Namaqua Daisies blossomed spectacularly on the West Coast – and the Fynbos, with its multiple species, are a feast for the eyes. All these spring – highlights of this new season are much celebrated after the deprivations of Covid-19 limitations and depressions of the past 18 months. We, as a team for Kinderhilfe-Kapstadt/SEEDS, are ‘gung-ho’ to get cracking and have coped – to the best of our ability – but only with your help!
During the limitations of this very difficult period, we have continuously striven to be positively active for the sake of the children in our care. We – together with your assistance – have succeeded remarkably well under these difficult circumstances. Since level 1 has been declared, South Africa is slowly returning to a more normal life. As more people are vaccinated, there is a feeling of confidence that we can join together to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.
This positive feeling of trust in each other must now progress to overcoming the dire economic fallout of the past months. There are tough times ahead. Unemployment is currently at its peak and the worst affected being those with little or no education or qualifications. These people, as do all parents, still have hope that their children will have a chance of a better life.
What can be a better start than when the children benefit from a good and healthy preschool education – such as Kinderhilfe-Kapstadt/SEEDS provides, together with your valued support!
Our vision is to extend our EDC care to primary school children from 7 to 13 years. We want to assist with building and supporting afterschool care centres – thus ensuring children are kept ‘off-the-streets’; participate in homework-support; have a healthy lunch and the possibility to join in sporting activities.
One such project has already been completed and Little Lambs anticipates having building plans for its after- care facilities approved in 2022.
Kinderhilfe-Kapstadt/SEEDS encourages financial support for the construction of small localized EDC centres – these facilities need to comply with the stringent requirements of the Department of Social Development – a costly undertaking – in order for the principal to apply for the much needed government grants. We wish to encourage such establishment, as each would nurture the development of c. 50-100 children in its care.
In many cases, the principals and staff have been extensively qualified with an NQF level at the local college and through the True-North Rainbow Development Framework and are now qualified to provide greater learning and play opportunities for children. Kinderhilfe-Kapstadt/SEEDS, where possible, supports these establishments in their endeavor to be compliant – but must, in the meantime, contribute financially to pay salaries to the (primarily) female teachers – who are mostly sole supporters of families.
Our prime goal is to support each of the following projects in accordance with its priority needs.
- Little Lambs Christian Daycare, Imizamo Yethu
- Heuwel Speelskool, Calitzdorp
- True-North with 4 ECD Centres, Vrygrond
- Sakhisziwe Youth Development Programme, Imizamo Yethu
- iKhaya le Thema, Imizamo Yethu
This vision is only achieved with the committed support and trust in our integrity by you, the sponsors of Kinderhilfe-Kapstadt/SEEDS.
In future, our newsletters will be individually dedicated to one specific project – thus we hope to maintain your continued focus on how your support sustains the improvements to the lives of so, so many children.
We are grateful that you share in our vision and are partnering with us to make this happen.
Warm regards
Elke and Marlis
